When my husband and I put a down payment down on our home in 1999, I really didn’t have any idea what it really meant to live off the grid. In fact, it seemed more like an adventure. Our house is in the middle of the state forest land in upstate New York. Our nearest electric power line is about a mile from our house. The fact that we had to live off the grid made this property even more desirable to us.
So many people have contacted me through my writings on eBay, in Countryside Magazine and various websites to ask me how to do it. How to set up a small affordable system that would handle a small household. It can be done. And it should be. Why not be independent? Use your hard earned money for other things more enjoyable……..or maybe for food?
I am going to try to explain the systems that you can buy or put together. There are even some you can build completely from scratch for very little money. It just depends on how much time you want to spend on it. Or if you want to spend some money, but not alot. You can do it. I know, we have been doing it now for over ten years. Neither one of us would go back to living connected to the grid. Instead we keep adding more components and hopefully……….in the future, we will driving an electric car!
