Starting with one solar panel, you can begin to cut down the cost of your electric bill. One solar panel can make a big difference. I talk about starting small pretty regularly. Trying to introduce others to ways of using solar without spending a huge amount of money. I recommend adding a small solar system to your home’s on-the-grid system. Do not hook it up to the grid. Many people will rave about the option of having a grid connected system so they can spin the meter backwards. And make some extra bucks in the process. I recommend setting up a small system, so you can power a few various items. Then lower that power bill while you are learning how to run a system of your own. You will learn slowly over time.
Start with one 50 watt solar panel. A small charge controller. An automotive inverter. And 2-4 golf cart batteries. Get some cables to connect them and you should be good to go. Plug in your lights to start with and see how you like it. I wrote this post back in August, Start With A Very Small Solar System, explaining how we built our system. A basic system is all you need in the beginning. Then add to it over time. It doesn’t have to be large and it doesn’t have to power a lot of items. Could be just your garage or a shop.
I have never regretted our decision to move here. At first it was like a camping trip. A new experience. Now it is just normal living for us. Of course, it isn’t normal for anyone else, as we do not have running water in the house nor refrigeration. But we are happy and we enjoy this life and our off-the-grid lifestyle.
